President's Corner

This is our first Newsletter on the Web, so we are making history.  AL “Mieskuoropäivät” in Florida are also history and I wish to take this opportunity to thank those brothers and sisters in song who made it possible. Florida Male Singers, as you remember, were celebrating their 35th anniversary and lots of hard work went into the planning and execution of the affair.  Finnfest 2004 was on at the same time and several male choruses from Finland had planned to attend the festivities but decided to cancel and reschedule their concert tours due to the workload at this end.  Lapin-Lauluveikot did come and their performances won our hearts with the excellent quality of each song, and the professionalism of every member of the choir remains an inspiration to us all.  Unfortunately, contact with local choirs was minimal due to our tight scheduling, which was our loss. 

 

We must, at this time, also thank our previous board from Thunder Bay, Ontario Canada for the hard and dedicated work they did to keep this organization on track.  Eric and Allan: it is easy to continue when everything is in order.

At the annual meeting I did mention that we are preparing another trip to Finland, possibly spring or early summer of 2006.  Planning for this is already in the works, so if there are singers in your choirs ready to commit and do it again for the 10th time, mark the time frame on your calendars. The concept for the next trip will change considerably.  We are, for the first time, going to include a female soloist.  Soprano Maarit Vaga, an American Finn well known both here and abroad, has agreed to sing with us during our concerts in Finland and Estonia where her own roots lie.

The concert tour will benefit local veterans' organizations and their “kiltas” who will also perform with us.  Estonia, for example, is the home of JR200 battalion of volunteers who came to Finland during WWII and fought bravely for its continued independence. Many veterans from that organization are still alive and we wish to honor them.  Almost every city and town in Finland has veterans organization and their choruses, called “Korsukuorot”, are well received and would complement our performances. 

I shall be traveling to Finland in May and will develop a tour itinerary proposal . On my return I’ll contact the directors at large who will pass along these suggestions to the membership.  By the time the Sudbury “Mieskuoropäivät” in 2005 rolls around we should have everything in pretty good shape. 

As I mentioned in the beginning, this is AL’s  first newsletter on the Web, with the intent that this site be used as a dynamic communications forum, a chain linking the infrequent  mieskuoro päivät and kuoromatkat, and perhaps even a new member recruitment tool.  To make the site a success we encourage everyone to submit suggestions, articles, and photos of interest for publication.  `

 Have a wonderful and safe summer.  Our next edition will be out this coming July.

         HELEMIKUU.

                    

Helemikuu,  se  on  männy  jo  ohi

ja  aatella  pittää, on  hujahtana  tovi,

että  mitä  tuosta  muistaa  maenita,

vae  pittääkö  aeheesta  ihan  painija?

No  alaku  se  olj  ollu  aeka  lumine,

siis  olj  ollu  iha  talavine

ja  pakkastae  olj  ollu  iha  tarpeeks  asti,

myö  "Loritassa" sillo  purettii  lasti.

Tietysti  naatittii  kaaniista  siästä,

sillee  voep  pahoesta  ilimoesta  piästä!

Lähettii,  oltii  pakkasta  paossa

ja  aarinko  paesto  piliviin  raosta.

Tok  monena  päevänä  kirkkaasti  paesto

ja  ulukona  olo  se  kaekille  maesto!

Mulla  olj  tuo "huaremi"  mukana,

siis  monjpäene  akkaväk  takana,

ku  ajeltii "Voortilla" perille  asti,

siis  naesija  olj  suurin  ruo  lasti.

Käätii  siellä "Vinlantija" päevillä  myös,

monj  vappaaehtone  olj  siellä  työs,

syötii  soppoo  ja  myös  räeskäleitä,

monj  näky  näläkäänsä  syövän  heitä.

Niitä  tarjoelj  lotta, "kapu" sekä  alikessu,

on  niihen  koulussa  ollu  monj  poeka-ressu!

Tappaeltii  tuttuja  ja  solomittii  suhteita  uusija

ja  ihmeteltii  palamuja  ja  Loritan  kuusija!

Olha  siellä  Suomesta yks kuulusa  naene;

tämä  olj  resitentti,  sieltä  Suomesta   vaine!

Käätii  kirkossa, tansseissa  ja  gaalassa,

siellä  olj  essiintyjillä "liperit" kaalassa.

Merelläkkii käätii huaremin kanssa seilomassa,

sinne  konneisii  kolikkoja  tuhloomassa!

Mailla  sentää  olj  kokkoos A.L. laalajiin,

jouvuin  minnäe  johtokuntaa  kiin!

Katotaa jos  minusta on tässä apuva  yhtää

ku  tyhjästä piästä on paha nyhtää!

Vappaata  aekoo jäe sentää iha mukavasti,

uamusin lenkkeiltii, joskus  rannalle  asti.

Tietysti  aarinkoo  rannalla  otettii

ja Atlannin ualtoja  kokkeiltii.

Heittelhän se  meitä rannalla pitkin ja poekin

vaekka  ualtoen eistä poes  koettoo  loekin.

Kirpputoreilla  usseinnii myö  kierreltii

ja  tietysti  jottae tarttu meijä hyppysii,

Onneks olj tuo Voorti iso "vääni",

mutta kotia tullessa olj  vieterissä iäni,

ku paenoo olj tullunna puolet lisse,

en sitte oekein tiijä, että missee,

nuo ostokset tulj, olj nyyttijä paekasta monen,

joutu monesti aakasemmaa tuon Voortin oven,

ku  naeset  ovesta ostokset  lykkäs,

ja näen tok, että  hyö ostosmatkoesta tykkäs!

Ostettii kottii vietäväks  appelsiinejä,

hyvältä maestu, vaek ee nuo ollu kovin viinejä,

ku  kuorj  olj  musta  ja  pinta  karkee,

mut  syötyvä tulj, ennen  toesen viikon  arkee!

Mukavasti siellä   tuo  aeka  hujahti,

neljän viikon piästä poeka  kottii  pujahti.

Kotona  ollu  on  kaaniit  päevät

mutta Loritan päevät nuo mieliin jäevät.

ku nii hyvijä olija kaekille  meille!

From the Barefoot Mailman's Reppu    

Tervehdys Amerikan Laulajien uudelle Puheenjohtajalle ja sihteerille, vieläkin harmittaa että en pääsyt, sairauteni takia mukaan juhlimaan kansanne. Mirja ja minä toivomme mitä parhainta hallituskautta teille ja toivomme kaikki yrityksenne onnistuvat.

Toivoisin että pitäisitte nimeni postilistalla, mieleläni luen ja seuraan sivusta uutisia vaikka en aina mukaan pääsekkään.

 

Jos voin olla avuksi jollain tavalla niin antakaa tietää, yritän parastani ja auttaa teitä.  Erkki  (Eric) Hautala soitti Pitkäperjantaina ja kertoi suunitelmastanne Suomen matkaa 2006 se on kova yritys, ei ole enää kun kaksi vuotta järjestelyaikaa jäljellä, vetää kireelle pojat.

From the Desk of your Honorary Chairman

Regards from sunny Florida. We had a great concert and Mieskuoro Päivät this past February. Thank you for keeping the Amerikan Laulajat tradition high.  The church concert was totally successful and good feeling abounded during the other get togethers. I'm still complimented with our performances. Thank you all.

 

We have come a long way and 2006 will usher in our 50th year of singing. Wouldn't it be wonderful to celebrate our Golden  Anniversary with  a tour of Finland?  Our Florida Board is exploring this idea. Changes must be made to ensure a successful tour, and you will be apprised on our plans.

 

Suuret kiitokset laulajaveljet - pitäkäämme laulu intoa korkealla.

Hyvää kesä lomaa ja aloittakaamme tuleva sesonki uudella innolla.
